Start low, go slow
Our golden rule for mindful consumption — and how to build your own rhythm.

'Start low, go slow' is a reminder to choose caution over momentum. It does not mean that a particular piece is safe for everyone, or that an unfamiliar product should be tried simply because it comes in chocolate form. Responsible consumption begins before opening the wrapper: knowing what is inside, understanding the serving information, and deciding whether consumption is appropriate at all.
Read the full label, especially when a product contains psychoactive ingredients. Total bar weight is not the same as active content, and a square of chocolate is not a universal dose. Do not assume that different bars, batches or preparations have equivalent strength. If reliable ingredient and serving information is missing, the cautious choice is not to consume it.
Orally consumed psychoactive ingredients can have a delayed onset, and their effects may last for hours. Timing and intensity vary with the substance, formulation and individual circumstances. Feeling little at first is not evidence that more is needed. Avoid taking additional portions to chase an effect; follow verified product guidance rather than a generic timetable from an article.
Your surroundings matter, but they do not remove the risks. A familiar, quiet setting can reduce avoidable demands. If psychoactive ingredients are involved, arrange sober support and avoid situations that require judgment, coordination or responsibility for others. Do not drive, cycle in traffic, swim, operate machinery or supervise children while impaired.
Consider your health before considering the setting. Psychoactive substances can be particularly risky for people with a personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, and interactions with medicines may be serious. Pregnancy and breastfeeding are further reasons to avoid them. Seek individualized advice from a qualified healthcare professional; do not stop or adjust prescribed medicines to use a product.
Avoid mixing psychoactive products with alcohol or other substances. A calm atmosphere is not a guarantee of a calm experience, and combining substances can make reactions less predictable. There should always be room to decline, stop a planned activity or ask for help without pressure from a friend, host or ritual.
If someone becomes distressed, reduce noise and stimulation, stay with them, and offer calm reassurance without arguing about what they are experiencing. Severe confusion, loss of consciousness, breathing difficulty, chest pain, seizures or immediate danger require urgent medical help. Tell healthcare responders what may have been consumed; protecting the person matters more than preserving a particular experience.
Keep all active-ingredient chocolate securely stored, clearly labeled, and out of reach of children and pets. Do not leave it beside ordinary sweets or offer it without explicit disclosure and consent. ATMAN is for adults 18+ only, and local laws still apply. The spirit of this rule is simple: no rush, no pressure, and no assumption that more is better.
